Cubs acquire former Reds reliever Taylor Rogers from the Pirates in NL Central affair

Left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers has been on three different National League Central teams in the span of two days, landing with the Cubs on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Rogers was part of the return package in the deal that sent third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds.

The Pirates then flipped Rogers in a deal with the Cubs. The Cubs sent High-A outfielder Ivan Brethowr to the Pirates for Rogers and cash, the team announced Thursday.

Rogers owns a 2.45 ERA in 40 appearances with the Reds. He, along with veteran right-hander Andrew Kittredge help strengthen a bullpen that has wavered this past month.

To clear room on the roster, the Cubs designated veteran right-handed reliever Ryan Pressly for assignment. Just six months ago, the Cubs acquired Pressly from the Astros as an option at closer. He held that role through early May before being demoted to earlier innings. Pressly recorded five saves and a 4.35 ERA in 44 appearances.

The Cubs’ main focus was pitching, but Castro helps cover a range of possible injury scenarios.
Schwarber is deferring his selection because of a rule requiring all living inductees to attend the ceremony. IU’s induction is set for Sept. 5, a day Schwarber’s Phillies visit the Marlins.
The Cubs’ first two trade-deadline acquisitions have been pitchers.
