OAKLAND — A suspect has been arrested and charged after police linked him to a BMW seen fleeing three recent home burglaries where a hodgepodge of unusual items were stolen.
Demetrius Sneed, 35, was charged with burglary and receiving stolen property after his arrest at the Crown Lodge Motel in Oakland on Aug. 26, court records show. Sneed allegedly admitted ownership of a BMW that had been used in three August burglaries and the Aug. 22 robbery of a man who was having lunch in his pickup truck on MacArthur Boulevard, court records show.
The losses from the three burglaries included gold jewelry and electronics, but also some items that are less-commonly targeted by thieves. These includes collectibles — Marvel statues, a 49ers helmet, baseball cards — as well as two urns filled with the ashes of dead dogs, and four pairs of shoes worth an estimated $6,000, according to authorities.
Sneed has only been charged in connection with one of the burglaries, on Aug. 19, and with possessing stolen items. Police say they found two diamond chains and two gold rings that were believed to be stolen when he was arrested.
Sneed was sentenced to federal prison in 2019 for possessing a firearm that had been stolen from a California Highway Patrol officer seven years earlier, court records show. He also served time in prison for shooting a friend in 2013. In that case, the victim shoved the gun away, causing Sneed to shoot him in the shoulder, after Sneed walked up to him, placed the gun to his head, and said, “I want you to know who is killing you,” according to prosecutors.
Sneed is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, with bail set at $70,000. He is next due in court on Oct. 15, records show.
