A Denver man was sentenced Wednesday to 43 years in prison for shooting a man in the head at a party in Edgewater nearly two years ago, according to court records.
Kyle Valdez, 31, took a deal and pleaded guilty in July to second-degree murder and second-degree assault, court records show.
The deal dropped four other felony charges from his case, including first-degree murder, two additional counts of second-degree assault and a weapons charge. Valdez’s deal also dismissed two violent crime sentence enhancers.
He was sentenced Wednesday to 43 years in prison on the murder charge and 16 years in prison on the assault charge, according to court records.
Those sentences will be served concurrently, said Brionna Boatright, director of public affairs for the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
On Dec. 10, 2023, Valdez attended a small party at the home of 29-year-old Edgewater resident Miguel “Angel” Barboza.
While at the party, Valdez pulled out a pistol and shot Barboza in the head, according to a news release from the Edgewater Police Department. The shooting happened at about 5:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of Ingalls Street, inside Barboza’s apartment.
Valdez shot another person in the hand and a third in the leg while other partygoers fought to subdue him after the initial shooting, police said.
