A person is dead after a police shooting in the Goldsmith neighborhood in southeast Denver at 4:20 a.m., said Ron Thomas, chief of police for the Denver Police Department.
Officers were responding to reports of shots fired and a domestic violence incident at about 4 a.m. when they saw a woman emerge from an apartment building at 4901 East Donald Ave. with a man following her. When the man saw police, he turned and ran, Thomas said. When police were apprehending him, he pulled out a handgun.
“During that struggle one officer did fire one shot, striking the individual. The individual did go down and an ambulance was called immediately,” he said at a press conference Friday morning.
Medical personnel pronounced him dead at Denver Health.
Officers believe the man was involved in the domestic violence incident reported. Police have not been able to contact the woman they saw, Thomas said.
The shooting occurred near South Dahlia Street and East Warren Avenue in the Goldsmith neighborhood in southeast Denver.
No officers were injured in the incident, according to the post. The District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
