Destiny 2 players have gathered en masse at the Tower to honor the late Lance Reddick, who passed away yesterday at the age of 60.
After the news broke yesterday, Guardians flocked to Commander Zavala, who Reddick famously voted for, to pay their respects. News quickly spread through the Destiny community as Reddick was not only an avid Destiny fan, but did occasionally As Commander Zavala, engage with players on social media.
Though it’s a little quieter in the Tower today, yesterday Guardians were almost always standing stoically in a circle around Zavala, using the Humanity Shield emote to show his character’s larger-than-life presence, or sitting in between their fellow Guardians for an impromptu candlelight vigil during the visit.
Over on the /r/DestinyTheGame subreddit, the post honoring Reddick quickly rose to become the second most popular post on Reddit, with many community members and former Bungie developers sharing their fondest memories of Zavala or Reddick himself.
Reddick’s pass hit the Guardians particularly hard, having spent the past nine years alongside his character in the game. As I appeared on various live streams on Twitch yesterday, it seemed like that was all people were talking about. Likewise on Twitter, where almost everyone in the Destiny community shared screenshots of the tower or posted videos showing all of the Guardians gathered to pay tribute to Zavala.
I just jumped into Destiny 2, and yes, players are gathered around Commander Zavala to pay tribute to his actor, the late Lance Reddick
Really touching.

Bungi too issued an official statement after the news He explained, “Lance Reddick was an iconic presence on screen, in Destiny, and most importantly, in person. His love for our community shone through in Commander Zavala, in his uncompromising dedication to his craft and in the radiant kindness that touched those around him. To say he will be missed is a profound understatement, but no less true. Rest in peace, Lance.”
In the words of Commander Zavala, “Eyes up, Warden.”
