Flights at Denver International Airport are grounded as thunderstorms bring the risk of flooding to east metro Denver, according to federal officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop at DIA at 4 p.m. until at least 7:15 p.m., the agency said in an alert. Arriving flights are delayed by an hour on average because of thunderstorms.
More than 400 flights were delayed or canceled at DIA on Tuesday, according to the flight tracking website Flight Aware. There were 427 delays and five canceled flights as of 5:50 p.m., with most of the delays reported on United, SkyWest and Southwest airlines.
A flood advisory is active for parts of northeast Colorado because of excessive rainfall, including DIA as well as central Adams, north central Araphoe, northeastern Denver and south central Weld counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage until 7:15 p.m., forecasters said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
