Doctor in critical condition after being struck by driver while biking near Illinois Medical District
Thousands of dollars have been raised for a Chicago doctor who remains in critical condition after a driver struck him as he biked home last week near the Illinois Medical District.
Ray Lee was biking from his job at Schwab Rehabilitation about 4:30 p.m. Oct. 29 when the driver of a red 2010 Ford Fusion struck him as he traveled north in the 400 block of South Damen Avenue, according to Chicago police and a fundraiser created by Lee’s family.
He suffered a serious injury and was taken to Stroger Hospital, police and his family said. ABC7 Chicago reported he remains in the intensive care unit with a brain injury.
Lee is a physiatrist who specializes in spinal cord medicine, according to his family.
“Ray is known for helping others regain their strength and mobility and providing compassionate care to countless patients. He is an incredible teacher, colleague and friend,” Lee’s family wrote in a GoFundMe, which had collected more than $35,000 as of Friday.
Lee’s wife and two children, a 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy, are “undoubtedly” the “most important part” of his life, his family wrote.
“As they navigate this challenging time, it’s essential that we rally around them to show our love and support,” his family wrote.
The driver continued driving after the crash, and no one was in custody as of Friday, police said.
The red sedan, with an Illinois license plate of BN64959, has previous damage to its rear passenger side, police said.
