Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin has season-ending elbow surgery

ANAHEIM — Tony Gonsolin’s return from Tommy John surgery lasted just seven starts before he needed a second elbow surgery.

Gonsolin underwent a procedure on Tuesday that Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman described as a Tommy John “revision with internal brace and some flexor cleanup.”

Recovery time is expected to be eight to 10 months, according to Friedman, which puts Gonsolin’s return somewhere in the  middle of the 2026 season.

The 31-year-old Gonsolin went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 2022, but he had Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 season and missed all of 2024 while recovering. He injured his back during spring training and didn’t make his return until April 30.

He made seven starts, going 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA until experiencing elbow pain after his June 4 start.

Gonsolin is making $5.4 million this season and is eligible for salary arbitration for the final time this winter.

RELIEVER ROUNDUP

Kirby Yates is scheduled to throw to hitters in a simulated game setting on Wednesday with Tanner Scott doing the same on the Dodgers’ off day on Thursday.

Brusdar Graterol is “progressing well” in Arizona, according to Friedman. Graterol had shoulder surgery last winter and hopes to return before the end of the regular season.

“Each day on the injury report he’s progressing. He’s doing well,” Friedman said. “We’ll continue to ramp up his progression. Hopefully he can keep checking off boxes and get out to facing hitters.”
