A 10-year-old dog is back safe with his owner after spending 11 days at the bottom of a four-metre deep well.

Jimmy, a corgi-cross dog, had been on a walk with owner Dorota Gruszczynska in Corby, Northamptonshire, on June 21 when he went missing.

Dorota searched for her pet for days with no luck after Jimmy chased something and didn’t come back.

After posting online and getting her local community to search for Jimmy, she had begun to lose hope until Corby Fire Service received a call about a dog in a well.

Firefighters used a reach pole to get to Jimmy, who was stuck for days in the well on Stephenson Way, wedged underneath cylinders.

Dorota’s desperate search and posts online helped the fire service identify Jimmy as her missing dog and reunite the pair after far too many days apart.

The owner of a dog that was stuck down a 13ft (4m) well for 11 days said she could not thank firefighters enough for "saving his life". Dorota Gruszczynska said 10-year-old Jimmy, a corgi cross, went missing on 21 June while on a walk in Corby, Northamptonshire, and she was finally reunited with him on 2 July. She said the much-loved pet was on a walk when he chased after something and did not come back. After she posted online and got the local community involved to help find him, he was eventually found wedged under some cylinders and was lifted to safety. Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a Corby crew was attending a nearby fire when they heard the sound of a dog barking that was found down a well on Stephenson Way. It said crews used a reach pole and lines to lift cylinders off Jimmy, so he could be lifted to safety. After searching local missing dog pages, it was able to contact his owner, it added.

Dorota and Jimmy reunited on July 2 and told the BBC that the fire service saved his life.

‘We searched the area so many times and nothing, we created posters, put them online and sent them around the local area,’ she said.

‘Firefighters had been called to the area, and had heard him barking, they asked if he had a green harness on and told me he was alive. It was near where we had lost him; we had called him so much in the area, but never heard him barking. We couldn’t believe it was him.

‘We’re so grateful for everyone who helped, including the drone company. They did a huge amount of work, purely out of their heart.

‘So many people shared the cause, and it helped as the firefighters knew to contact me.’

Jimmy has been given a clean bill of health after his ordeal. He was hungry but not dehydrated, and is already back on his feet.

A similar accident happened to an 18-year-old Jack Russell, who was trapped down a well for 14 hours because she was ‘too polite to bark’.

The dog, named Jessica, vanished from a garden in Penmaenmawr, Conwy, sparking a frantic search.

Owner Paula Chester said: ‘We went up the mountain, up to the quarry, calling out her name. We were out until about 10 pm and must have walked miles, but we couldn’t find her.’

The next morning, Paula was told Jessica had been found, 25 feet down a well.

‘It was covered in sheets of nettles and Jessica must have smelled something and fallen down,’ Paula said.

Firefighters were needed to rescue Jessica, who had stood silently the entire time she was in the well.
