Dog shot by police officer in Humboldt Park

A Chicago police officer shot a dog that tried to bite the officer in Humboldt Park, the department said.

Officers were on the 3600 block of West Division Street Sunday night gathering information for an investigation when they encountered an “aggressive” dog, police said.

The dog tried to bite one of the officers, who responded with a shot that hit the dog, a department spokesperson said.

No officers were injured, and the dog was taken to a veterinary clinic, police said. The dog’s condition was unknown Monday.

A spokesperson for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates officer-involved shootings, said Monday the office is conducting a preliminary investigation to determine if the inquiry falls under its jurisdiction or the Bureau of Internal Affairs.
