Drive-by shooting wounds man walking to Oakland homeless camp

OAKLAND — A 60-year-old man walking to his dwelling at an East Oakland homeless camp was wounded in the head in a drive-by shooting Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital.

The shooting happened about 2:06 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of East 12th Street in the San Antonio district. There is a large homeless camp that stretches east along East 12th Street from 16th Avenue to past 18th Avenue in the area.

The man told police he was walking to his structure in the 1800 block of the camp when he heard gunfire coming from a passing vehicle and realized he had been wounded in the head.

The vehicle kept going westbound on East 12th Street.

Police recovered 17 rifle casings in the area, authorities said.

Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and if the wounded man was the intended target of the shooter. No other victims were found or showed up at a hospital.

No arrests were announced. A detailed description of the shooter and the vehicle they were in was not released.
