Driver critically injured after colliding with train in Oakley

OAKLEY – A driver suffered critical injuries after crashing into an Amtrak train Monday night in Oakley, officials said.

The collision was reported just after 7 p.m. at the East Cypress Road railroad crossing, near Main Street, according to Oakley assistant city manager Danielle Navarro.

An initial investigation indicated the vehicle drove around the train crossing arms and collided with the side of the train, which was moving at the time, Navarro said.

The driver — and sole occupant of the vehicle — was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries.

There were no known injuries among the passengers on the train, according to Navarro.

In an advisory around 7:45 p.m., the city said the crossing would be closed for two hours. Motorists can use Main Street to Delta Road to Sellers Avenue as an alternate route.
