A driver was killed in a crash after failing to yield to a Los Angeles Fire Department engine in Pacoima Sunday morning, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 10:45 a.m. in the area of Terra Bella Street and San Fernando Road. Two firefighters also were also hospitalized, both with non-life threatening injuries, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.
The man was driving a white Toyota Corolla and attempted to make a left turn from Terra Bella Street onto San Fernando Road, but failed to yield to the fire engine, which was responding to a call for service with its lights and siren on, said Lt. Matthew Bielski of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.
The man died at a hospital, Bielski said.
It wasn’t immediately known how many firefighters were in the engine.
Video from RMG News, a freelance news organization, showed a white Toyota sedan with major damage across the driver’s side of the car resting against a light pole. The fire engine showed moderate front-end damage.
The crash occurred at a T-shaped intersection at West Terra Bella and San Fernando Road just outside Whiteman Airport, the video shows.
Further information about the driver was not immediately available. His identity was withheld by police pending notification of his relatives.
