BERKELEY — Alameda County prosecutors have charged a 45-year-old Dublin man with burglary and weapons violations following his arrest on suspicion of breaking into a sorority house at UC Berkeley earlier this month, authorities said.
Officers arrested the man without incident on Wednesday in Castro Valley, a day after obtaining an arrest warrant, according to a statement from Berkeley police. Police said a search of the man’s residence also led to the discovery of an assault rifle, ammunition magazines and 900 rounds of ammunition.
Prosecutors have charged the man with burglary, peeking while loitering; invasion of privacy, possession of a firearm by a felon; possession of ammunition by a felon and unlawful entry on a property.
According to police, the man is suspected of stealing underwear and food from the sorority and watching women shower in the communal shower room.
It all stemmed from a November 1 incident at the all-female sorority house in the 2300 block of Warring Street. Authorities said residents of the house reported seeing an unknown man inside a resident’s bedroom who then later fled the house through a rear door about 6 a.m.
During the investigation, police said they talked to other women who had seen the man in the sorority house as early as 3 a.m. Officers also reviewed security video from the house and found multiple clips of the man walking inside and outside of the house until about 6:35 a.m., police said. They added that during that time, the man changed clothes and put on a ski mask.
Detectives used technology to find images of the the man’s vehicle before and after the burglary and used that information to identify the man and obtain an arrest warrant for him.
