Eastbound Interstate 70 reopens after closing near Byers due to semitrailer, SUV crash and fire

Eastbound Interstate 70 reopened after being closed near Byers on Monday morning because of a semitrailer and SUV crash and fire, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The interstate closed at exit 316: U.S. 36 near Byers at mile marker 316 around 3:30 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. A semitrailer and an SUV crashed and then caught on fire early Monday morning, according to a 3:54 a.m. X post by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department. 

The interstate reopened at 6:51 a.m.

There were eight people in the SUV, including children, and they were all taken to the hospital. Two people of unknown age were in critical condition, according to the sheriff. The semi’s driver was not taken to the hospital.
