Escaped inmate from Santa Clarita camp is caught

A 33-year-old inmate who walked away from a Santa Clarita fire crew camp was caught, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

Alejandro A. Tobarfuentes was discovered missing about 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, from Francisquito Conservation Camp No. 4, the agency said.

Tobarfuentes was taken into custody without incident by corrections’ special agents in Mecca and put in the California Institution for Men in Chino.

Tobarfuentes and an accomplice were arrested on June 8, 2024, after crashing their Mini Cooper head-on into a Toyota Camry while driving northbound in southbound lanes after narrowly missing an Orange County sheriff’s deputy who had tried to pull their vehicle over, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said.

The Camry driver suffered serious injuries.

Authorities said the pair had just burglarized a home in San Juan Capistrano.

Tobarfuentes was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for first-degree burglary and displaying a forged driver’s license or identification document.

Tobarfuentes is a Chilean national in the United States on a visa waiver from the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
