Evacuations are ongoing in parts of Spain paralysed by floodwaters amid days of rain.

Storms battered the island of Mallorca on Tuesday, and now all activities have been brought to a halt in the city of Murcia.

A mum and her eight-year-old daughter were among the people trapped in their cars as roads were turned into rivers.

Firefighters had to rescue at least two more drivers this afternoon as floodwaters continued to rise.

Footage shows torrents of water rushing through urban areas and making roads impassable.

A number of underpasses have been entirely submerged in the last couple of hours.

In one area of the city, the water had almost covered several vehicles abandoned in the middle of the street.

People are seen wading through knee-deep water in several neighbourhoods.

Multiple highways and main road have been shut in Murcia this evening after what is understood to be one of the most intense downpours in recent years.

Local meteorological service Aemet said that in 20 minutes it had rained more than the normal average for the summer as a whole.
