Ex-Bears coach Matt Nagy reportedly to get interview for Jets’ head job

Former Bears coach Matt Nagy has gotten himself back in the mix for head-coaching jobs.

Nagy has been floated by national media outlets as a candidate in the last few weeks, and NFL Network reported Monday the Jets requested permission from the Chiefs to interview him for their vacancy.

Nagy, 46, was fired by the Bears after the 2021 season along with former general manager Ryan Pace. In four seasons as head coach, Nagy went 34-31 and made the playoffs twice.

Nagy said of his mistakes as Bears head coach, “I’ve got to use those to make me better. I’ve been able to do that — step back, be humbled and understand that I can grow in so many different areas. When and if the time comes where I get another opportunity, I’ll be better from it. I can use that to make me better at my next opportunity — wherever and whenever. … I’m hungry to get another opportunity, and if and when it happens, I’ll be definitely more prepared.”

When the Bears fired him, he wisely made a lateral move to go back to the Chiefs as quarterbacks coach for Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs promoted him to offensive coordinator last season.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl each of the last two seasons and finished this season with the best record in the NFL at 15-2.
