Cupertino Campout
Families are invited to pitch a tent at Creekside Park on July 20-21 for this year’s Cupertino Campout, with activities courtesy of Cupertino Parks and Recreation.
Campers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner (no barbecues allowed). A continental breakfast will be provided.
Registration is $33 per person for residents and $40 for non-residents at https://www.cupertino.org/our-city/departments/parks-recreation/community-events.
Free YMCA membership
This summer, the YMCA of Silicon Valley is offering free memberships for low-income families in the West Valley area, with the help of funding from Santa Clara County.
In a program called “Get Summer,” teenagers entering high school this fall on up to 2024 high school graduates will be eligible for a free YMCA membership through July 31. Teens will be able to use gym facilities such as courts, pools, and fitness classes; participate in volunteer projects; and connect join social gatherings.
Register for the free membership at ymcasv.org/get-summer-teen-initiative, or in-person at nine locations across the county, including the Northwest YMCA in Cupertino.
Olympiad winners
Student teams from Monta Vista High School and Kennedy Middle School took top honors in late May at the 40th annual Science Olympiad National Tournament at Michigan State University in East Lansing. The win was a first for Monta Vista’s team, while Kennedy’s team celebrated a back-to-back victory.
Monta Vista student Ishanvi Kommula was among five high school seniors to win a $10,000 Founders’ Scholarship from the Science Olympiad USA Foundation.
Science Olympiad brought together 120 middle school and high school teams advancing from state-level competitions. The students compete in hands-on and lab events covering topics in engineering, physics, epidemiology, astronomy, chemistry, robotics and coding.
