The family of a 26-year-old woman attacked on a Blue Line train this month has launched a fundraiser as she faces “a long road ahead” toward her recovery.
Bethany MaGee is being treated at a hospital for severe burns she suffered when a man poured gasoline on her and set her on fire Nov. 17 near the CTA Clark and Lake station, according to the GoFundMe and prosecutors.
The fundraiser had collected nearly $230,000 as of Wednesday afternoon, more than halfway toward its $330,000 goal.
“Many of her immediate medical expenses are covered by insurance and a victims fund, but with such a long road ahead of her, the freedom from financial worries would be a tremendous blessing,” her family said in the fundraiser post. “No gifts are expected, but any that are given will go directly to Bethany.”
The family did not respond to a request for comment about the fundraiser. On the campaign page, they asked for continued privacy and noted they will not provide further updates on MaGee’s condition.
“What we can say, is this: Bethany is a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, granddaughter, niece, and aunt,” her family said.
“She is a good friend. She is sensitive, caring, intelligent, and imaginative. She loves living in Chicago, and her gentle spirit makes her a favorite with every pet she meets. She enjoys playing tabletop and video games with her community, and she is quick to include others in conversations and make them feel welcome. She is kind.”
Federal prosecutors and investigators have described the attack as “brutal and vicious,” and have said the man charged in the case “had no business being on the streets.”
Lawrence Reed, 50, is charged with terrorism and remains jailed.
