Federal agents briefly detained a person after a car crash in East Garfield Park Wednesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.
The driver of a white sedan was going east on Congress Parkway when he hit a black sedan driven by a 49-year-old woman going north on California Avenue, police said. The driver of the white sedan attempted to flee before being detained by federal agents, but was later released at the scene.
The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said. No citations were issued, and officers did not work with federal agents to detain the driver.
“In accordance with the City of Chicago’s Municipal Code and Welcoming City Ordinance, at no point did CPD coordinate or assist federal authorities with immigration enforcement,” a Chicago police spokesperson said.
The detainment was captured in a video, first reported by The Triibe, in which a federal agent is seen putting his hands around a Black man’s neck. In the background, a person can be heard asking the agent why he was “choking” the man.
The Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday evening.
