Federal agents lead caravan through Southwest Side, question residents about citizenship status
Federal immigration agents led a caravan Thursday morning across Chicago’s Southwest Side, making several stops to question residents on their immigration status.
The caravan, led by U.S. Border Patrol Commander-at-Large Gregory Bovino, began in Little Village around 11 a.m. and continued south toward Chicago Lawn.
Federal agents pulled over at a Shell gas station near 53rd Street and Kedzie Avenue, where Bovino was seen going inside and heard asking a man if he was a U.S. citizen. Bovino was also heard asking a clerk about the gas station’s immigration hiring policy.
As he was exiting the gas station, a Sun-Times reporter asked Bovino what he was doing in the neighborhood and he responded, “Federal immigration enforcement.”
It wasn’t known if any arrests were made.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for comment.
The caravan attracted several residents who followed agents throughout the neighborhoods blowing whistles and honking their car horns.
