Federal judge orders Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino into her courtroom

A federal judge has ordered top Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino into court next week in what could be one of the most dramatic hearings yet over the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration campaign in Chicago.

U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, who has shown increasing frustration with the feds’ tactics as they carry out arrests in neighborhoods around the city, called a hearing at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse for Tuesday morning.

In her brief order, she told the feds to “produce Defendant Gregory Bovino, in person, for this hearing.”

The order came one day after Bovino, U.S. Border Patrol commander-at-large, was accused of tossing tear gas into a crowd in Little Village without justification, and after Ellis more than doubled the amount of time Bovino could be questioned under oath in an ongoing lawsuit.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement Friday that Bovino participated in the deployment of “riot control measures” after a “mob of rioters grew more hostile” and threw objects at agents, “including one that struck Chief Greg Bovino in the head.”

DHS did not immediately respond to an inquiry seeking comment about Ellis’ order on Friday.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
