An initial investigation indicated that a fiery head-on freeway crash that killed a person near the Richmond-San Rafael bridge early Tuesday may have been influenced by drugs or alcohol, the California Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened about 1:40 a.m. after the CHP received reports four minutes earlier that a Range Rover was driving westbound in the eastbound far left lane of Interstate 580, according to a statement from the CHP. The Range Rover slammed into a Honda Civic just east of the bridge, killing the Honda driver. That person died at the scene.
Authorities did not identify the Honda driver immediately.
The Range Rover then became engulfed in flames. According to the CHP, paramedics on the scene pulled the Range Rover driver from the vehicle and provided treatment. The CHP said the driver remained in critical condition at a hospital after being rushed there in an ambulance.
The crash shut down bridge access for those going east for about 3½ hours. The CHP opened the lanes about 5 a.m.
No other information was available immediately.
