Fire prompts evacuation at high school in Granada Hills

A fire broke out on the roof of a building under construction at John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills on Thursday morning.

The fire began around 10 a.m. on Dec. 4 on a rooftop, and students were evacuated from nearby buildings, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. By 10:30 a.m., the fire was knocked down, LAFD spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz confirmed. Construction materials were ablaze on the roof of the building. The fire was contained to the roof.

Details about the cause of the fire were unknown, but it was believed to be due to construction, Lantz said.

No one was injured, according to fire officials. Students were assessed at the scene, but none were transported.

The high school is located at 11246 Gothic Avenue.

Firefighters will remain at the school to coordinate with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety for structural assessment, according to the fire department.
