The Fire had their three-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-1 loss Sunday to New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. They finished the game with only nine players on the field after Brian Gutierrez received a straight red card in the first half and Dje D’Avilla was sent off after his second yellow card in the second.
The Fire (5-5-4) opened the scoring on a goal by Philip Zinckernagel in the 19th minute, but the red card on Gutierrez for violent conduct put them a man down in the 30th.
NYCFC, however, didn’t capitalize on the advantage until the second half. Mounsef Bakrar tied the score in the 58th minute before Hannes Wolf made it 2-1 in the 70th. Alonso Martinez closed the scoring with a penalty kick in the 89th, five minutes after D’Avilla got his second yellow.
Chris Brady made five saves for the Fire.
