Flight to LAX diverted to Colorado airport after unruly passenger yells slurs at staff

A flight traveling to Los Angeles International Airport from Virginia was diverted to Colorado on Wednesday after an intoxicated passenger yelled racist slurs at airline staff.

Police in Grand Junction, Colorado, responded around 11:15 a.m. to assist with the unruly passenger who waved a skateboard at Breeze Airways staff and broke free from restraints that workers placed on him twice before the plane landed, police said in a statement.

The passenger also physically and verbally threatened staff and other passengers, Breeze Airways said in a statement. Once the plane landed in Colorado, officers restrained the passenger and removed him.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect hadn’t assaulted anyone, Grand Junction police said. He was taken into custody at the direction of the FBI.

The flight from Norfolk was delayed at Grand Junction Regional Airport until a new crew was brought in to take guests to LAX.

An investigation is ongoing, and the FBI may announce if the suspect is charged.
