Former Bears All-Pro safety Eddie Jackson has been eying a comeback and got a tryout with the Steelers on Tuesday.
Jackson, 31, played for the Ravens and Chargers last season, but hasn’t been on a team since. He said this month he wanted to return to the NFL if he got an opportunity at legitimate playing time with a good team, specifically saying he’d join the Eagles “in a heartbeat.”
The Steelers are 4-3, and starting safety DeShon Elliott went down with a knee injury. They also worked out former Bengals safety Vonn Bell, who played all 17 games for Cincinnati last season.
Jackson played for the Bears from 2017 through ’23 and made two Pro Bowls. He was an All-Pro selection in 2018 with six interceptions and two forced fumbles. He went to the Ravens on a one-year deal, but they cut him after nine games when he objected to a reduced role. He jumped from there to the Chargers’ practice squad and was active for two games.
The Bears drafted Jackson in the fourth round out of Alabama in 2017, and he was an All-Pro his second season. He finished his Bears career with 459 tackles, 15 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) and six fumble recoveries.
After the Bears had penalty issues yet again on Sunday, coach Ben Johnson all but threw his hands up and put the onus on his players and presumably team leaders to solve the problem.

Williams hasn’t played well in the last four games, all against struggling defenses, and hasn’t established enough of a track record to brush it aside as a slump.
