Former Colorado jail commander charged with watching inmate strip-search videos for sexual gratification

A former southern Colorado jail commander is charged with more than 100 counts of invasion of privacy after investigators say he repeatedly watched videos of female inmates’ strip searches.

Edward Aber, 62, is charged with 117 counts of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification and one count of official misconduct, all misdemeanors, for actions during his employment at the La Plata County Jail between February 2019 and January 2024, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The CBI began investigating Aber in January after the agency was contacted by the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, officials said in a news release Thursday.

Aber was promoted to commander in 2018 and gained access to the footage uploaded to evidence.com in 2019.

He was placed on administrative leave in July 2024 after “allegations of unlawful sexual contact with female inmates and the sexual harassment of numerous female employees,” state officials said.

No charges were filed in connection with sexual contact with inmates, but Aber resigned later in July 2024 during the sexual harassment investigation.
