The Giants announced on Friday morning that former players Javier López and Curt Casali will join the team’s front office as advisors to baseball operations.
Additionally, Paul Bien has been promoted to assistant general manager of baseball analytics after spending the last four seasons as the team’s vice president to baseball analytics.
“Javy was great on the teams that I had,” special advisor to baseball operations Bruce Bochy told this news organization. “He was the leader of the bullpen, got things in order there. He’s a guy that wasn’t afraid to call somebody out if necessary. … I’m not surprised at all that Javy’s heading to the front office. I’ve always respect how he carried himself, how he was around the players, how much respect the had from all the players.”
López, 48, was a member of the Giants’ “Core Four” along with Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt, helping lead the Giants to World Series titles in 2010, ’12 and ’14.
The left-hander spent seven seasons of his 14-year major-league career in San Francisco from 2010-16, posting a 2.47 ERA over 446 appearances with the Giants in the regular season and a 1.38 ERA over 25 games in the postseason. López, who also serves as a broadcaster, won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 as well.
Casali, 37, appeared in 159 games for the Giants over three seasons (2021-22, ’24), serving as Buster Posey’s backup in ’21 as the Giants won a franchise-record 107 games in the regular season. After being traded to the Mariners at the 2022 trade deadline, Casali returned to San Francisco in May 2024 and spent the rest of the regular season with the team.
