Freebie of the week: Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn

People who like trains or anything Disney-related should check out “Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn,” located at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

This building is a remnant of a miniature steam railroad that Walt Disney built in 1950 at his house in Holmby Hills to amuse his family and friends. Designed to simulate a barn from Disney’s childhood in Marceline, Missouri, it was his hobby workshop where he built miniatures and model trains. Disney’s love of trains prompted him to include railroad attractions at his titular theme park, which opened in 1955.

After his death, the barn was moved to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum in Griffith Park, of which Walt was a founding member. The barn is open to the public most third Sundays of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
