A 25-year-old man has been charged with armed violence in connection with the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer.
Adrian Rucker, armed with a rifle, encountered police Thursday night in the Chatham neighborhood, police said.
Officers were chasing another person into an apartment building in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue when they found Rucker. An officer fired and fatally shot Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera, police said.
Rucker fled the scene but was found and arrested shortly after. Rivera, a four-year police veteran assigned to the Gresham District tactical team, was rushed by her fellow officers to University of Chicago Medical Center. The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined she died from a gunshot wound to the back.
Rucker of Freeport was charged for armed violence and possession of an invalid FOID card, a fake ID and drugs. His first court appearance is scheduled for Sunday.
Another officer’s wrist was injured and was taken to the hospital in fair condition.
Two people fled from the apartment where the shooting happened and were initially taken into custody, CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said Friday. Three guns were found at the scene, according to police.
