Fundraiser launched for woman killed in Bridgeport armed robbery, ‘A beacon of light in our lives’

The family of a woman who was killed in front of relatives during a Bridgeport hoodie sale turned deadly has launched a fundraiser as they call for justice.

Gabriela Ochoa, 31, was fatally shot during a hoodie sale around 8:40 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of West 27th Street, according to Chicago police.

“We will not rest until justice is served for our beautiful baby girl,” Andreina Ochoa, the organizer of the fundraiser, wrote. “Gaby was a beacon of light in our lives. Bringing warmth, laughter, and unwavering love to everyone she met.”

For safety, Ochoa, a concealed carry license holder, insisted on accompanying her teenage nephew who was selling two hoodies, police and a witness said.

“Everything is normal at first, [Ochoa’s nephew] lets the guys see the hoodies, check everything out,” the witness, who wasn’t identified by the Sun-Times, said.

But when someone in the Tesla Model X asked if Ochoa’s nephew had CashApp, and he said he didn’t, a rear seat passenger of the Tesla got violent.

“Give me your stuff,” he said, according to the report.

“[The gunman] was like ‘So you don’t got CashApp?’ and that’s when he pointed a gun at [Ochoa’s nephew] and his aunt Gabriela,” the witness said.

Ochoa pulled her gun and tried to return fire, but it jammed and they shot her, according to the witness.

Ochoa suffered a gunshot wound to her chest and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police.

“The loss of Gaby has left an excruciating pain and a void in our hearts that will never be filled,” the fundraiser stated. “She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.”

The fundraiser, which was put together to help with funeral and burial costs as well as other financial burdens, has raised over $600 of it’s $20,000 goal as of Thursday morning.

“Her smile could brighten the darkest of days, and her spirit lifted all those around her,” Andreina Ochoa wrote. “Her kindness, compassion, and love for life touched countless people.”
