Gabe Vincent sizzles in Lakers’ preseason loss to Mavericks

LAS VEGAS — Gabe Vincent got off to a torrid start, but the short-handed Lakers rested several key players in the fourth quarter and lost to the Dallas Mavericks, 121-94, in a preseason game on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Arena.

Vincent made six 3-pointers and scored 18 of his team-high 22 points in the first quarter. He finished 6 for 15 from the field (6 for 11 from 3-point range) on a night when the Lakers were outscored 37-8 in the fourth.

Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, the Lakers rested Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia among several others. Lakers coach JJ Redick told reporters that guard Bronny James didn’t play because of a sprained ankle.

With LeBron James also out for several weeks, the Lakers went with a starting five of Vincent, Rui Hachimura (19 points), Jaxson Hayes (12 points, 10 rebounds), Dalton Knecht (eight points, eight rebounds, seven assists) and Jarred Vanderbilt (five points, seven rebounds and four assists). None of them played in Tuesday night’s game in Phoenix.

Vanderbilt played 13 minutes Wednesday before being removed midway through the second quarter with a left quadriceps contusion after banging his left knee with a Mavericks defender.

The Lakers (1-4) finish their preseason slate against the Sacramento Kings on Friday night at Crypto.com Arena, with Doncic, Reaves, Smart, Ayton and LaRavia sounding likely to play.

Doncic made his preseason debut in Tuesday’s game, finishing with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes in a 113-104 road loss to the Phoenix Suns.

The Lakers open the regular season next Tuesday night when they host Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
