Gas canister explosion at UCLA science lab triggers sprinkler system

A gas canister that exceeded its pressure threshold caused a minor explosion that triggered the sprinkler system Tuesday morning at UCLA‘s Molecular Sciences Building.

The minor explosion occurred about 6 a.m., and no injuries were reported, according to the Daily Bruin.

Steve Lurie, the associate vice chancellor for campus and community safety, told the campus newspaper that no hazardous materials were released in the building.

Charles E. Young Drive was closed outside the Molecular Sciences Building, and campus buses have been re-routed.

UCLA reported at 8 a.m. that the incident had been resolved, and emergency crews were departing — and to expect residual traffic delays.
