A ‘strong, durable, and everlasting peace’.This is what Donald Trump has promised for Gaza after two years of Israel’s full-scale war.
Across the besieged Gaza Strip, Palestinians flooded the streets, cheering and chanting – the first sound of joy amid endless shelling.
The ‘historic’ deal, set to be ratified today by Israel’s government, includes the partial withdrawal of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) from Gaza, as well as the release of the remaining hostages still held by Hamas.
Beneath the euphoria witnessed both in Gaza and Israel, there are many unknowns, causing deep unease. No one knows who will govern Gaza – Hamas, a Palestinian entity or an international team led by Tony Blair.
And while the ceasefire promises an end to fighting, few in Gaza trust that Israel will keep to its part of the deal once the captives are freed.
