The 57-year-old reportedly told her son she was attacked by a group of men.

She is said to have been knifed near her home before dragging herself back into the house, according to German outlet Welt.

The police have launched a manhunt to search for the attackers, but have not yet released more information regarding any motive.

Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, said he has been informed about a ‘heinous crime’ in Herdecke.

He said: ‘It must be swiftly investigated. We fear for the life of the mayor-designate and hope for her full recovery.’

Ms Stalzer was elected as the Herdecke mayor on September 28, standing for the Social Democratic Party, which is one of the major parties in the country and considered centre-left.

She received around 52% of the votes in the historical Ruhr region city with a population of 22,500.

In her bio, Ms Stalzer describes herself as an employment lawyer and mother of two teenagers who is driven by ‘justice and genuine interest in people.’
