Suffolk County prosecutors had previously linked Heuermann to Mack’s death but, up until now, had never formally charged him with her murder.

Mack, a sex worker from Philadelphia who went by the alias “Melissa Taylor,” went missing in 2000.

She was last seen alive in the spring of 2000 in New Jersey, but her family did not report her missing.

Hikers first discovered parts of Mack’s remains in November 2000 in the Long Island Pine Barren in Manorville, but investigators were unable to identify her.

On April 4, 2011, the rest of Mack’s remains were uncovered near Gilgo Beach.
