Girl, 9, and man wounded in shooting near Uptown elementary school

A 9-year-old girl and a man were wounded in a shooting Friday afternoon outside an elementary school in Uptown.

The girl and man, 45, were standing on the sidewalk near William C. Goudy Technology Academy, 5120 N. Winthrop Ave., when someone opened fire about 3:25 p.m., Chicago police said.

The girl suffered a graze on her calf and was taken in good condition to Lurie Children’s Hospital, police said.

The man was struck in his arm and rushed into the school, where staff members rendered aid to him until paramedics arrived, officials said. He was then taken in good condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

No arrests were made.

Students were dismissed from school about a half-hour before the shooting occurred.

Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th) said she spoke with the principal of the school, Bill Yeh, who she said “was able to make sure that all the students and the families were safe at that time.”

“Any instance of gun violence is unacceptable, but when it’s very close to our schools, when it’s in a school zone, we all have to be on high alert, and this is outrageous,” said Manaa-Hoppenworth, whose ward includes the area where the shooting occurred.

Daniel Held, who lives nearby, said he had just left his apartment and was on his way to the gym when he heard “three or four bangs.”

He took his headphones off, then heard the driver of a silver sedan yelling to a man walking on Winona Street, who got into the car before they sped off north on Kenmore Avenue, he said.

“I thought it was the construction at first, but then the car peeled off, and I was like, that’s weird,” said Held, 27.

Nearly a dozen spent shell casings were marked by police on Winthrop Avenue, and several others were marked around the corner on Winona Street.

Manaa-Hoppenworth said she has asked the police department for more resources in the area, including the 20th Police District where Friday’s shooting happened, to address an uptick in shootings in recent years.

“We would love to see more patrols in this area, especially foot patrols, bike patrols, even the car patrols are helpful. We would love to see more officers, and so this is something that we have been asking for,” Manaa-Hoppenworth told reporters at the scene.
