Golden Banh Mi brings unique twists to Vietnamese sandwiches in Aurora

Embracing the spirit of the multi-ethnic cuisines that permeate Aurora, one eatery is blending some of those unique flavors into its sandwiches.

Golden Banh Mi, located inside a former Subway shop on the northeast corner of Parker Road and Yale Avenue, offers a bevy of twists on Vietnamese sandwiches. The restaurant, which opened in 2023, infuses a variety of different styles into its bánh mì, from a Japanese-influenced katsu chicken to a pesto chicken to crispy shrimp.

The restaurant is owned by the same family running Golden Saigon — long known for delectable Vietnamese and Chinese dishes (I’m a big fan of the make-your-own rolls) — just two doors down.

Every sandwich on the Banh Mi menu is $14, and they are hearty and packed with fillings, particularly the Korean-esque Kim-Cheese steak. Featuring a ton of marinated bulgogi steak with kimchi and cheese, it’s a melt that’s loaded to the gills and includes classic bánh mì accoutrements, such as pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro and jalapenos. It becomes even more decadent if you choose to add a fried egg.

A popular sandwich is the Pho-Rench Dip, a Vietnamese-inspired take on the classic French dip: a baguette loaded with pho toppings with a beef pho broth consommé in which to submerge the sandwich.

One of my favorites is the braised pork belly sandwich, featuring plenty of tender pork belly with chicken pate and a house spread. Those flavors are what I crave when I’m in the mood for a more traditional bánh mì.

Aurora is a hotbed for tasty foods, and Golden Banh Mi has certainly earned its place among them.
