Google is down for thousands of people, leaving many unable to use the search engine or access their emails.

The disruption began just after 8am, according to online outage tracker DownDetector, with people in the UK, US and Europe affected.

Users in Turkey report being unable to access YouTube, while Gmail users are struggling in Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece.

Google Maps is failing to load map data, search for locations or calculate routes, while Google Drive is not letting users access their documents.

One user said: ‘Google is down in my country and I’m laughing at how many things we cannot do at work at the moment.’

Another said: ‘Google services and some international traffic seemingly “down”. Time to go outside. :)’

People have received the message ‘5xx server error’, which indicates a problem on Google’s end, not with the user’s internet connection.

‘Our National Cyber Incident Response Center has requested a technical report from Google regarding the cause of the outage.

‘We are closely monitoring the situation.’

Google has been approached for comment.
