The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power has warned approximately 9,200 customers in Granada Hills and Porter Ranch that they should expect to experience water-service disruptions on Wednesday, Aug. 6, during morning water-use peaks due to the need for an emergency repair at a local pump station.
The effected area is bounded by Rinaldi Avenue on the south, Balboa Boulevard on the east, De Soto Avenue on the west and the foothills and hills to the north.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, a valve that controls the flow of water failed to open while crews were making repairs at a pump station that connects to a 10-million gallon water tank that serves the area, resulting in the cut off of the water flowing into the pipes, the DWP said.
Crews on site are working to make complex repairs. DWP crews have also begun soil and earth removal in order to gain access and repair the valve that is 20 feet underground.
The DWP expects the excavation to take 14-16 hours before actual repairs can begin, and the agency anticipates repairs to be completed on Friday, Aug. 8th.
To help restore and maintain water pressure and supply, the DWP has requested support from a provider of high-capacity pumps and hoses to resupply water in the 54-inch trunk line feeding the water tank, the agency said.
The DWP is urging customers in the area to conserve as much as possible by turning off sprinklers, washing machines and dishwashers for the next 24 hours.
The DWP is coordinating with the Los Angeles Fire Department to develop a water-supply contingency plan for the area, including providing water tankers while the repair work is in progress, and is also coordinating with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The DWP will provide drinking water to customers at Holleigh Bernson Memorial Park in Northridge, O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills, and at the intersection of Tampa Avenue and Sesnon Boulevard on the border of Northridge and Porter Ranch.
The hours of operation for these locations had not been released yet.
