Ground delay at Denver International Airport derails hundreds of flights

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground delay at Denver International Airport on Wednesday for thunderstorms, preventing hundreds of flights from leaving the gate on time, according to the agency.

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for the Interstate 25 corridor, including Denver and DIA, throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Potential impacts include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and tornadoes, weather service forecasters said.

Flights in and out of DIA are seeing average delays of nearly 90 minutes, according to the FAA.

Those delays are expected to reach up to 110 minutes by 7 p.m. as weather continues in the area, FAA officials said in the ground delay advisory.

At 3:10 p.m., 628 flights were delayed and 10 were canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.

Southwest had delayed the most flights at 269, followed by 184 United flights, according to FlightAware. SkyWest reported 98 delayed flights.

Southwest also canceled seven flights.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
