For her latest project, Mirren committed to starring in a superhero film for the first time in her decade-long career.

The Queen vet joined the star-studded cast of Zachary Levi and Lucy Liu to play an immortal goddess in Shazam! Fury Of The Gods – a sequel to the 2019 DC film.

In an interview with The New York Times, Mirren spoke with Liu and revealed what made her want to be in a superhero film for the first time.

“We’re above superheroes,” she said. “Honestly, I don’t watch a lot of superhero movies, but I saw the first Shazam and was blown away.”

Mirren continued, “So when Shazam 2 came out, because of the joke, I was like, ‘Well, if I did a superhero movie, that’s the one I’d like to be a part of.’

She continues to talk about her costume for the role of an antagonist and deity.

“I now have a lot of sympathy and respect for any man who plays a gladiator because they carry a hell of a load on their shoulders I’ve found,” she said.

“The costumes are heavier than they look,” Mirren recalled. “And we wobbled around in giant platform shoes.”

She added, “Gladiators have never had to deal with huge, awesome heels.”

“I’m all about looks,” she said, realizing it was worth it. “If it looks good, I’ll take it. It also covered my butt.’

Mirren also spoke about how playing a goddess is different than playing other types of antagonists like she has done in the past.

“It’s a different psychology because you don’t have to deal with normal human psychology — which is great,” she said. “We didn’t have to be like, ‘Why is this villain doing this? Was she abandoned by her mother when she was young?’

“My deputy made a scene as we were walking through a marketplace,” she continued. “And I told her how to do it like a goddess, ‘You gotta go like you’re going through honey or cream or butter or whatever. You absolutely have to own the space.”

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17th.
