Mother’s Day weekend is here and while it’s nice to take her to brunch or dinner, there are some moms out there who will want to do something besides just getting a meal.
So for adult children looking to do something fun with mom, or young families who want to go out for the weekend, here are some ideas of things to go and do with Mom on her special day.
Descanso Gardens

Go on a nice tranquil walk among the stunning grounds that include rose and Japanese gardens, an oak forest and the Boddy House, a 22-room mansion built by the original owner of the Gardens. As an added treat for mother’s day check out the new exhibition dubbed “Daphne’s Wardrobe — Metamorphosis into Nature.” It features artworks by women that includes wearable garments, photography, sculpture, painting, and works on paper. Descanso is open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., so go anytime this weekend. Admission is $15 for adults, $11 for seniors (65+) and students with ID, $5 for children 5-12 and free for children 4 and under.

Los Angeles County Fair

Whether it’s adult children or young families, this is a great place to take mom since there’s so much for anyone of any age to do. There are rides, the always popular farm animal races in the big red barn, and lots of fair food items like deep-fried Twinkies, plus live performances. The concert lineup for Mother’s Day weekend includes The O’Jays on May 9, Mariachi Vargas and Alicia Villareal on May 10 and Chris Young May 11. Fair admission is $21.50 for adults, $15.50 for children 6-12 and seniors 60+, and free for children 5 and younger.
Mother’s Day Modern Makers Mart

Check out handcrafted goods made by locals at this special Mother’s Day event on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. More than 50 vendors will set up their booths plus there will be live music, food trucks, and a beer and wine garden. Tickets are not required for this free event but RSVPs are requested.
Movie buff tour

When people think of movies of course they think of Hollywood. But many people don’t know that Torrance also has a rich film history with more than 200 movies and TV shows shot there through the years. And to capitalize on this history the city offers a map of famous film locations. So if mom is a movie or TV buff take her on a sight-seeing tour to see where parts of shows like “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” were shot. She can also see where parts of films like “Scarface,” and “Horrible Bosses,” were filmed in Torrance. Poolside with Mom

If mom just wants to just sit back and relax on Mother’s Day weekend Yaamava’ Resort and Casino has you covered with their Mom’s Day Off special. It’s happening at the hotel’s pool deck on May 10 from noon to 6 p.m. The special includes a private lounger, day bed or cabana plus catered food, and a gift from the Serrano Spa. There will also be live music and of course the pool vibes. Tickets start at $50 plus fees.
