A span of Highway 38 in the San Bernardino Mountains that has been closed for more than three months because of a washout is scheduled to reopen temporarily starting Christmas Eve, Caltrans said.
There will be no travel restrictions, although the key link to and from the east end of Big Bear could close if weather creates a danger, Caltrans said.
The highway will reopen at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and is scheduled to remain open through Jan. 5.
After that date, as crews repair culverts, slopes and debris flow barriers, the portion from Mill Creek Road (Middle Control Road) to Hills Ranch Road (Forest Road) will be closed Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The highway will be open at all hours on weekends.
Angelus Oaks will remain accessible from Mentone. Motorists coming from north of the closure will still be able to reach the camps.
Road conditions may be monitored on the Caltrans website and on the Caltrans Quickmap.
