Hillside crash spills into Walgreens parking lot, killing pedestrian and injuring several others

A driver crashed in a west suburban Hillside intersection Wednesday and careened into a nearby Walgreens parking lot, where he killed a pedestrian and injured several other people, authorities said.

A male driver in his 70s hit a police vehicle near the intersection of Laverne Avenue and Butterfield Road around 12:30 p.m. , according to Andrew Mack, a Hillside Police Department spokesperson.

The driver then drove into the parking lot of a Walgreens at the intersection of Butterfield Road and Wolf Road, where he hit several vehicles and a male pedestrian in his 70s.

The pedestrian struck by the car died, Mack said. Several other people were injured.

Multiple people were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition, he said. Several people were taken to Elmhurst Hospital in less serious condition, Mack said.

Two police officers were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in good condition.

Police said the one-block radius near Butterfield Road and Wolf Road is closed while officers investigate.
