Holiday gun violence leaves 12 wounded, 3 dead across Chicago

At least 12 people have been shot, three fatally, across Chicago since the start of the long holiday weekend Wednesday, police said.

On Wednesday, police said, four men were shot about 12:04 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Halsted Street in Englewood. Police say two men approached the group and opened fire.

One man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A 27-year-old male was shot in the right leg and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 38-year-old man sustained a graze wound to his right arm. A 33-year-old male sustained a gunshot graze wound to his right forearm, police said.

On Thursday, a man was discovered unresponsive about 10 p.m. near the 7400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing. He was shot in the back and right armpit, according to police. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A 37-year-old man was shot around 11 p.m. Thursday after he was involved in a verbal altercation with another man, according to police. The two men were arguing near the 300 block of West Marquette Road in Englewood when the offender pulled out a gun and shot the 37-year-old multiple times. The man was hospitalized in critical condition, police said. No one is in custody.

About 12:30 a.m. Friday, a 15-year-old boy was shot near the 2900 block of East 91st Street in South Chicago, police say. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition, police said.

A 17-year-old boy was near the 5700 block of North Rockwell Street in West Ridge about 1 a.m. Friday when he was shot in the inner left thigh, police said. The boy was in good condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

About 2 a.m. Friday, a 36-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen near the 7300 block of South Stewart Avenue in Englewood, police said. She was listed in fair condition.

About 3 a.m. Friday, a 30-year-old man sustained a graze wound to his right thigh near the 5600 block of South Maryland Avenue in Hyde Park, police said. He was in good condition.

A 31-year-old man was near the 6300 block of South Dorchester about 3:10 a.m. Friday when he was approached by three men in a silver sedan, according to police. Two men stepped from vehicle and shot the man. The man was struck in the back and hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the shooters fled the scene.

A 25-year-old woman was shot and killed Friday in West Chatham, police said. She was walking near the 8000 block of South Harvard Avenue about 5:20 p.m. when she heard a loud noise and realized she had been shot, authorities said. She was struck in the head and was hospitalized in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead, police said.
