What makes this photo great?
Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s sentencing day was a full-circle moment for me. On the day he was indicted on corruption charges in 2022, I raced to his Southwest Side house to get a photo of him backing his SUV into his garage. It was only fitting that I was also in the scrum of photographers trying to get his photo and reporters asking him for comment as he walked in and out of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse on the day he was sentenced to 7.5 years and fined $2.5 million.

Perp walks are quick and hectic. As the defendant exits court, you have to have your exposure set, be quick on the shutter button and be quicker on your feet as you and countless other members of the media scramble, run and backpedal to get what they need to tell the story.
