Hundreds of DIA flights delayed as severe thunderstorms move across Denver metro

Hundreds of flights leaving Denver International Airport are delayed because of severe thunderstorms across the Front Range, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA grounded all departing flights for about an hour on Tuesday afternoon but shifted the ground stop to a ground delay at 3 p.m. Arriving flights are delayed by an average of 83 minutes because of thunderstorms, according to the agency.

There were 469 flight delays and 3 canceled flights as of 3 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. 

Southwest Airlines reported 231 delays, followed by United with 98 delays and SkyWest with 86.
